After talking about the advantages brought by the use of technical language in business coaching, let us test its application and operative boundaries. An excessive use may, in fact, lead to something very unpleasant.
If the coach's knowledge of both the topic and the technical terms has a very limit, that is as far as you can go with it. If sharing such lexicon leads to a deep rapport, it is also true that, once it is established, the only thing we have to look after is not losing it. Saying foolish or senseless things using a language that allowed rapport to be developed is a terrible mistake which could undermine further development in the relationship. The client may feel lost, not understood or, even worse, cheated by a very deceiving and unreal knowledge of the topic.
Second to that, such use is one the highest examples of incongruence. When gestures and words do not match we always face an incongruence and the subsequent alarmed reaction in the client.
Coaching, as every other form of consulting, are as great as they are essential. Such minimalism, apparently an expression of excessive modesty or care, is actually one of the greatest form of respect towards the client. By strictly respecting his/her frame and using the best possible resources within it, we can reach such great outcomes and results that may feel, if not real miracles, at least amazing.
In the end, we should use technical language when we are sure it helps the establishing and development of rapport, keeps the interaction with the client alive helping him/her to reach her objectives and goals. On the other hand, let's keep off when its use is way beyond what is requested. Once again, this is a resource, to be used with great flexibility.
