The Christmas holidays are always an opportunity to draw a few conclusions about the year (and this time the decade as well) gone by. We always come out with New Year Resolutions which we often abandon within a couple of weeks. This year, more than ever, we all want to improve our well being, with both a stronger family bond and a working activity that helps others. The rest will come natural. The new decade is an unique opportunity to apply our vision, consolidate our results and begin to make our long term project finally come true. The holidays give us time to spend with ours and plan a more structured action-plan for the year to come. Based on our experience, we would like to suggest you a few things that will surely help you improve your vision, focus on your goals providing important ready-to-use resources for a big step ahead in your efficiency.
This first Christmas suggestion for yourself remains Amazon Kindle. Now available in the international edition, this fantastic, small sized tool gives you an opportunity like never before. You can read and download your books, magazines and newspapers anywhere in the world at no charge thanks to a free wireless connection. The best feature is that you can sample each and every book before buying them, and you can do the same thing with every newspaper or magazine available, starting with a totally free 14-day trial. Kindle is an indispensable resource for the traveling manager, coach or more simply for those who travel a lot. With a fantastic 3 to 4 weeks long-life battery, you can even forget to charge it. It helps us protect the environment reducing the amount of paper and, last but not least, if you are tired to read you can let Kindle read the book for you with its unique text-to-speech feature.
New times and new media, then. A very detailed, easy to use and extremely well written is How to Say It: Marketing with New Media by Alison Woo (also available on paper edition), where you can find a great description and use of the new aspects of digital communication as well as ready-to-use patterns ready for customization. For the new or even the most expert negotiator, Jim Hennig’s How to Say It: Negotiating to Win (paperback) is another important resourceful book, though in my humble opinion nothing will equal William Ury’s The Power of a Positive No (paper) as a clear example of how human relationships go. A coach will find a lot of interesting titles available on Kindle, starting from Coaching, Evoking Excellence in Others by James Flaherty (paper) which insists a lot on the use of a different, more solution oriented language, as we always point out, providing a lot of interesting hints and techniques as well as a section about working on ourselves. The Power of Self-Coaching (paper) by Joseph J. Luciani shows how to take care of ourselves in five, easy steps after dealing with all the resistances arising from the will and/or the need of change. Last but not least, John c: Maxwell’s Mentoring 101 (paper) offers a brilliant perspective on mentoring, which can be easily defined one of the operative and show-how-to aspects of coaching.
In the end, we would also like to offer a few suggestions on noetic sciences. This subject, which is arising a constant growing interest, even thanks to Dan Brown’s new best selling novel The Lost Symbol (paper) has strong contacts points with the Law of Attraction and really represent an extremely interesting evolution of the scientific border, a bridge able to unite science, faith and philosophy. The most recommended books are Lynne Mc Taggart’s The Intention Experiment (kindle ) (paper ), probably the milestones or the manifesto of noetic sciences, followed by The Field (Kindle ) by the same author (paper). Other extremely interesting titles are Edmund J. Bourne’s Global Shift (paper).
Finally, a few words about leadership. Though I tried hard and harder to look for new interesting titles, my recommendation for a great book about leadership and several other aspects of life goes to The Complete Works of Abraham Lincoln (paper), an endless source of inspiration, humanity and deep values.
Before I bow thanking you all for reading (and, I hope, appreciating) my suggestion, I wish you all a Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year and an extraordinary new decade. May 2010 be the first of your best years.
