We all love our job and our mission, especially when a new challenge comes, often in the form of a new customer. The big doubt is how much to charge? Oftentimes our pricing leaves the value of our service and contribution out, actually the only parameter worth considering as a reference.
Charge according to our value means to acknowledge our professionalism and the importance our contribution brings. Besides, we give our customers more respect and value. Sometimes we tend to get a new customer charging a fee which is lower than our merits ands skills. If the customer may be inclined to choose us, on the other hand this will lead to work in less than ideal conditions. This way we test ourselves, starting at a disadvantage working with tension and apprehension, when instead we should always be positive about our value, constantly respecting it. Charging a fee proportional to our value and contribution we help our customer understand what can be improved and how our intervention made the desired outcomes possible and easy to achieve.
Such a thing becomes more evident in hard times, as it recently happened to me. A serious herniated disc condition forced me into bed first and then at home for more than one month, during which I realized events such as this are the result of signals and messages our bodies sends and which we always neglect, up to the point we can’t help but acknowledge them. After 16 intense months lived with great intensity, the attitude I was getting was to keep on doing what I was doing even when my contribution was underestimated or, even worse, not acknowledged at all, despite I perfectly knew that. This led, in the end, to a certain dissatisfaction with consequences and side-effects in every filed of life. When such a signal gets neglected, there is a risk for it to come back more and more often and always at higher levels. And so it was.
In other words, it is impossible to respect the others if we don’t respect ourselves, what we do and give. Charging according to our value, service and contribution is a form of respect for everyone and everything else, ourselves first, to better do what we do, have happy customers and live better. When we are the first to limit and not value ourselves properly, why should the world treat us differently?
